• Posture and neck anatomy also contribute. A receded chin (retrognathia) creates less physical space between the jaw and neck, making even modest submental fat more visible.
• Submental fat (treatable non-surgically) is the pinchable, soft tissue directly beneath the chin. This is what all three treatments address.
• Significant skin laxity or jowling (loose neck skin without substantial underlying fat) may need a different approach -- surgery or HIFU, depending on severity. Non-surgical fat reduction on minimal fat beneath very loose skin will not produce a satisfying result.
• Platysmal banding -- the vertical neck cords visible when tensing the neck -- is caused by the platysma muscle, not fat. This is a different concern requiring different treatment (Botox to the platysma is the standard approach). An assessment will clarify if this is part of your presentation.
• FDA-approved for submental fat reduction -- one of the few non-surgical fat treatments with full regulatory approval specifically for the chin area.
• The mechanism is permanent: once fat cells are destroyed by deoxycholic acid, they cannot regenerate. The reduction achieved is maintained indefinitely as long as there is no significant weight gain.
• Typical course: 2-4 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart. The number depends on the volume of fat being treated. Some patients with minimal submental fat see sufficient improvement from 2 sessions; those with more significant deposits may need 3-4.
• The most important consideration for planning: swelling is significant for 5-7 days post-treatment. The submental area becomes noticeably swollen immediately after injection and remains so for up to a week. This is a normal part of the mechanism, not a complication -- but it needs to be planned around work commitments and social obligations.
• Results are visible from 12 weeks as the destroyed fat cells are cleared by the body's lymphatic system. Final results at 3-4 months after the last session.

Option 1 -- Kybella (Deoxycholic Acid) Injections

Kybella is a synthetic version of deoxycholic acid -- a bile acid that your body naturally produces to emulsify dietary fat. Injected directly into submental fat, it permanently destroys the cell membranes of fat cells.

The permanent nature of Kybella's fat reduction is its standout advantage -- particularly for patients who want a definitive result without ongoing maintenance. However, if significant skin laxity co-exists with the fat, Kybella alone will not tighten the skin that is left behind after fat is removed.

Option 2 -- CoolMini (CoolSculpting Submental Applicator)

CoolMini is the CoolSculpting applicator specifically designed for the smaller, curved surface beneath the chin. It uses the same cryolipolysis technology as body CoolSculpting -- controlled cooling to selectively destroy fat cells -- adapted for the submental anatomy.

Option 3 -- HIFU for the Submental Area
